The minimum distance for a portal to appear is like 65 blocks from the crystal stand. Make the arena's floor exactly that long. I did an Old One's Army arena build a while back -- I didn't set out to make it any particular length, but I actuated a couple blocks at the ends of the arena just to get the portals centered in the towers I built.

The Old One's Army enemies are immune to traps and lava. They also walk through walls if they're in the way. They pretty much made it impossible to afk farm this event. Your best approach is probably just a long, flat sky bridge. Make it out of asphalt if possible. It can also come in handy to have a couple layers of platforms for extra mobility.
Actuators can be used to transform the arena after the event has started. Keep in mind that walls can result in the enemies simply moving through Should work.
