However, taking the heel and cutting off the lug and welding it to a current made semi-auto receiver is NOT illegal, nor is it considered a machine gun. I was worried a well worn USGI parts kit would possibly yield less than desirable accuracy, same thing with a rifle made from a country which was known for cheaper alternatives and questionable quality at one point.

I did not know this until I was talking to some interested passers-by at SHOT and I said they were hammer forged.No reason to get a BM-59 vs. M1A unless you are into collecting one. There are some great choices for M1A's / M14's and though more involved than an AR, you can build your own tackdriver. The JRA's must have been a big hit the BM59s where $1050 not long ago and IIRC the JRA M1a is a cast receiver for those that care.I took off my walnut handguard on my JRA M14 and replaced with a fiberglass one. I was taking my time firing my M14 but I saw a bit of smoke billowing from the had guard so I thought my hand guard was burning. I used the hand guard clip removal tool and took my walnut handguard off. A very small number were stamped PRM -1. I was informed this stood for PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF MARYLAND. Not being stamped M14 made them legal in Maryland as well as New Jersey.
