John deere 4020 problems.
The 4010 and VERY early (IIRC, pre-'65) 4020 tractors DO have a 3rd reverse. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th. So, 3rd reverse is 12mph. Great for plowing snow. :rock.

Now we are a dairy farm. We have a 1964 John Deere 4020 diesel, the weight retainer for the governor in the injector pump broke so we ordered the part and began to disassemble the pump. (uses the RoosaMaster DB pump). During disassembly, my Dad broke the "cam locating screw" off in the housing, so we cannot continue to disassemble.
But the 4020, 4230, etc. use large-frame starters the larger starter-solenoid can sometimes draw - or surge close to 20 amps. When hooked directly to a standard ignition switch or push-button - that gets a little worn - it can cause a problem. Using the extra relay in-between takes the load off the ignition switch.
Then slide the outer quadrant back in and if possible, add an extra washer behind the snap ring to remove excess slop in quadrants. Rod #24 should not need adjustment if shifting was ok before the other rod broke. There is a 5/16 bolt on the outward side of the injector pump.
