From the core, there should be two pillars that lead up. Follow them (you might have to tunnel a little.) When you get close to their tops there should be ground around you, but the gravity will be in flux. Sometimes I build a ramp from the side of the pillar to the surrounding terrain.

Unlock a node then go back to the core. It is kinda dumb, you should be able to unlock the core first if you want to.
