For me, the books I consider perfect are Les Miserables, Don Quixote, Watership Down and The Iliad (there's bound to be more but for the time being these are the ones that pop into my head). Les Miserables - it's tragic but also immensely life-affirming.

His Emperor series will be 5 books when the next one comes out, but it's just too fictionalized and untrue to the historical record for my taste.

It's about fifth in a series and dips a little into unrelated side plots that may not interest readers who aren't following along with all the books, but the core plot made a surprisingly huge impact about lasting damage that can result from an act of cruelty.Berserk is one of the best works of fantasy ever.
