I don’t think you can take the synth ascension as a machine, since becoming a machine is the next step after becoming a synthetic. As of 3.6.1, machine empires (except driven assimilator and rogue servitor) cannot use bio pops effectively. You cannot assimilate them into your empire.

Yes, it will happen eventually after you reach the endgame, but having Jump Drives researched will make it more likely that crisis will trigger sooner. Synths also increase chances of the contingency if I recall correctly. Early days of Stellaris it did now it's really only what crisis is likely to fire.
