Heavenly doesn't have very good beginner terrain. First-time snowboarders definitely benefit from some very specific pieces of terrain for learning the component skills that get them to the point where they're turning. Kirkwood and Sierra both have much more of this, as do most other resorts on the north shore.

Here are tips from my friend who goes to Tahoe often: -Bring the right ski/snowboard clothing: Puffy jacket, fleece, good base layer (no cotton) -If you've got a large enough car or a ski rack, rent ski/snowboard hardware from Sports Basement. -Get lift tickets ahead of time at Liftopia.
There are rental homes in Olympic valley (palisades) so you could definitely live 5 min from the mountain. Anything in Truckee is about 15-20 minutes from the resort without traffic. Nightlife is very minimal unless you go to Reno (45min -1hr drive) or South lake (1hr -1.5 hr drive).

Flying into Reno is your best bet but Sacramento is not too bad if you're able to get a good flight deal. As far as venturing out to other states goes, Ikon wins hands down imho. Whistler, Telluride and Abay are the only resorts on Epic that really interest me. Otherwise, with Ikon you get Alta, Snowbird, Jackson, Big Sky, and Aspen which are all great skiing destinations. Sierra at Tahoe is another one up there.
