Duramax ticking noise.

Apr 9, 2019 · New to the forum and new to Diesels! I just bought my first Diesel and its an 04 LB7 with 156k on it. Truck needs some work but thats not the issue.. While test driving I noticed a ticking sound from 1100 rpm till short of 3000rpm. If I´m flooring it it goes away and nothing at idle or very light acceleration. This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. Do any of you L5P owners notice a tapping or knocking noise that is synched with engine rpm when you let off the accelerator and coast? It only seems to happen between 1,000 and 1500 rpm. My 16 LML made a similar noise sometimes, but this L5P seems to do it more. It's not the typewriter tick, that's for sure.

I had the oil pan (pacific performance engineering pan )because original pan drain plug is too high and all oil don't drain out. now the noise is gone, I'm thinking the oil pick tube up was hitting the bottom of pan.On mine the "ticking" was about a 6 mo. warning that the injectors were going bad. When at idle (in park or drive doesn't matter) there is a loud ticking noise coming from what sounds like drivers side rear of engine. It is only at idle as soon as throttle is given it goes away. At first I didn't think anything of it but it keeps getting louder and louder.

That's how you've eliminated the engine internals. If the noise continues when the torque converter is no longer attached and spinning, then the noise is coming from something that's moving/spinning. My 05 was making the same “ticking” noise under acceleration and it ended up with all of my injectors needing to be cleaned. They were all luckily within spec after a good cleaning.
