Seriously, look for your first ore in a Deep Ocean biome. Find at least one and process it to create a Charm that makes it easier to find. After that, it is semi-smooth sailing on finding more. Also, look into ore processing mechanics so to get the most out of it. Mekanism isn't too costly to set up to get 3x ore processing.

So after making the portal pad and going to the mining dimension I immediately made a Mining Gadget with all the upgrades and proceeded down to the deep slate later. I mined the upper portion.
